Technological Terms: An Overview

These past few years, there seems to have been a huge increase in technological terms. Terms that would have sounded like gibberish a few years ago. In this article, we completely understand you. We’ll be completely honest with you; we were confused about it too! So let’s take a quick dive and learn about these terms.

The first and most important term that has been circling around social media and the technological world is AI. But what does it actually mean? AI stands for artificial intelligence. AI, defined by Investopedia, refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think like humans and mimic their actions. Put simply, AI is a robot that portrays thoughts similar to humans. Nowadays, it has become more prevalent in a multitude of industries; for instance, scientists and engineers are currently attempting to manufacture self-driving cars by implementing artificial intelligence into the vehicles’ mechanisms. It allows businesses to penetrate into their existing markets and diversify into new ones. An example of AI may be a type of natural language processing in smartphone tools like Siri and Cortana, voice recognition in chatbots and helpdesk systems, subtitles for films, pattern recognition, handwriting recognition, image recognition, face recognition and language translation such as in Google Translate. Artificial intelligence opens a wide number of doors for us as humans, it can make our life simpler!

The next term that goes hand in hand with AI is machine learning. Machine learning is the study of computer algorithms that improve automatically through experience and by the use of data. It is seen as a subset of artificial intelligence. The study of mathematical optimization delivers methods, theory and application domains to the field of machine learning. Most products that are based on machine learning have had varying levels of success and many believe future developments will focus on the use of deep learning and emotional artificial intelligence. Machine learning uses a supervised environment to teach the computer and requires human intervention. For example, in image recognition, the computer would receive feedback from humans to confirm that the image was identified correctly.

The last term we are exploring in this article is Deep learning. Deep learning is an advanced form of artificial intelligence, where computers are able to automatically collect feedback from the results of their processing and improve their performance by using this to refine the algorithms they use. Furthermore, Deep learning occurs in an unsupervised environment with no human interaction. It is said to be another strand of machine learning. If we dig deeper, we also find out about neural networks. Neural networks are used by deep learning. They aim to mimic the way that the human brain processes raw data into meaningful information so that it can learn more efficiently. This is particularly useful when incomplete data is available and the software needs to use deep learning techniques to provide pattern recognition.

We hope this article has given you an insight into these nuanced terms; they are becoming more and more relevant in our society and it is without a doubt that more technical terms will evolve in the future!
